The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a strongly worded warning to Iran, calling for an urgent agreement to de-escalate tensions before a deadline set for Tuesday.
Trump had earlier threatened possible strikes on key civilian infrastructure in Iran if authorities failed to guarantee unrestricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz by 20:00 EDT (01:00 BST Wednesday).
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, the US leader painted a grim picture of the potential outcome, warning of devastating consequences if a deal is not reached.
He suggested that failure to resolve the crisis could lead to irreversible destruction, while expressing hope that a shift in leadership or approach could open the door to a more positive outcome.
Trump added that the situation marks a critical turning point in global history, describing it as a decisive moment that could bring an end to decades of what he characterised as corruption, violence, and instability.
He concluded by expressing support for the Iranian people, while reiterating the urgency of reaching a resolution.
