A Nigerian coalition based in the United States has pushed back against comments by American lawmaker Kimberly Daniels, criticising her call for the removal of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
The group, identified as the Nigerian-American Coalition for Strategic Stability, described Daniels’ remarks as misinformed and influenced by an incomplete understanding of Nigeria’s security landscape.
Daniels had earlier urged the Federal Government to reconsider Matawalle’s position, citing concerns from a recent security assessment. In a statement shared on social media, she pointed to alleged gaps in his experience and issues linked to his time as governor of Zamfara State, calling for a leadership review within the defence ministry.
Responding, the coalition warned that such external commentary could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and misrepresent the country’s security realities. In a statement signed by its convener, Maxwell Akarachi, the group said the lawmaker’s position reflects a broader trend of foreign opinions formed without sufficient context.
“It is troubling that a foreign legislator would take such a narrow view without recognising the progress being made under challenging conditions,” the statement said.
The coalition argued that insecurity in regions such as the North-West and North-Central is driven by deep-rooted structural challenges, cross-border crime, and evolving threats, rather than the actions of a single official.
According to the group, Matawalle—who serves under President Bola Tinubu—has played a role in strengthening military coordination, improving intelligence sharing, and supporting efforts to stabilise affected areas. While acknowledging ongoing challenges, it said there have been tangible gains in disrupting armed groups and restoring access to communities.
The group also raised concerns that Daniels’ comments echo narratives aimed at weakening confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions, warning against what it described as the spread of half-truths.
While emphasising the importance of accountability, the coalition maintained that any allegations against public officials should be addressed through Nigeria’s legal and institutional channels. It cautioned against external pressure campaigns and called for a more balanced, evidence-driven approach.
The coalition further urged international partners to engage Nigeria with respect and accuracy, stressing that cooperation should prioritise solutions over criticism. It also encouraged Nigerians at home and abroad to support national institutions, noting that unity and strategic coordination remain key to achieving lasting stability.
