US Congressman Urges Sanctions on Nigeria Over Plateau Killings, Writes Secretary Rubio
A United States lawmaker, Mark Harris, has called on the U.S. government to consider sanctions against Nigeria following recent deadly attacks in Plateau State.
In a letter dated April 2, 2026, addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Harris raised concerns over what he described as rising violence against Christian communities in Nigeria and Syria.
The congressman urged the State Department to compel both countries to take firm and immediate steps to safeguard vulnerable populations, stressing that many Christians continue to face killings, displacement, and intimidation because of their faith.
According to him, such attacks go beyond political unrest, describing them as violations of fundamental human rights, including religious freedom and human dignity, which governments are obligated to protect.
Harris acknowledged previous actions taken by the United States, including designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and targeting extremist groups. However, he expressed worry that recent incidents suggest the situation remains dire.
Citing reports from Nigeria, the lawmaker referenced a recent attack in Plateau State where at least 30 people were reportedly killed during a Palm Sunday incident, describing it as a grim indication of ongoing insecurity and insufficient protection for affected communities.
He argued that the attacks are not isolated but part of a broader pattern of violence, alleging that authorities in both Nigeria and Syria have failed to adequately address the crisis.
Harris also posed a series of questions to the State Department, seeking details on diplomatic actions already taken and potential measures being considered to hold perpetrators accountable.
These measures, he suggested, could include sanctions, visa restrictions, and conditions on foreign aid if the governments involved fail to act decisively.
Highlighting the timing during the Christian Holy Week, Harris noted that many believers in affected regions are unable to worship freely, often living in fear or mourning victims of violence.
He concluded by urging stronger international intervention, calling on the United States to take a clear and firm stance in defending religious freedom and ensuring governments uphold their responsibility to protect innocent lives.
