The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, says the police officer who shot and killed a suspect in Effurun, as seen in a viral video, will be prosecuted for murder.
Edafe spoke on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, while reacting to the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by an Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman.
According to the police, the incident happened on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition through a waybill service.
The command said the officer, in violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm and killed the suspect.
Reacting, Edafe described the incident as one of the most difficult moments of his career as police spokesperson.
Edafe said, “I will start with the issue at hand, which is a very sad issue.
‘Since my six years of public relations, this is my most difficult moment, because having an incident that cannot be explained is very difficult. There is no explanation for this.
“That policeman, I just don’t get what I will say was wrong with him.
“Police cannot attribute problems to spirituality, but that may not be far from me, because that’s the only explanation that one can give to what he did.”
Edafe explained that transport companies had been advised to inspect parcels after concerns that criminals were using waybill services to move weapons and drugs.
He said after the package was checked and the firearm discovered, the suspect was restrained and officers were instructed to bring him in.
According to him, despite the suspect being tied and pleading for his life, the officer allegedly attempted to shoot him once, then reloaded and fired again.
“We told the transport company of the need to search the waybill before they allow it to fly because drug peddlers and gun barons, that is armed peddlers too, started using, transporting this thing through the means of Waybill. So on Sunday, this young man came with a Waybill.
“Having had a meeting with the CP, the park decided to check every Waybill before they were allowed to go.
Edafe said after the discovery, the suspect was restrained and officers from the Effurun Area Command were directed to retrieve him.
“On checking a particular Waybill, they saw a Beretta pistol with four rounds of live ammunition. They quickly arrested the guy and tied him to his back and called the area commander Effurun area command, who now mandated a team, a surveillance team, led by this ASP, to go and bring the suspect. The instruction was very clear, go and bring the suspect. That was the instruction.
He added that despite the suspect being tied and begging for his life, the officer attempted to shoot him once, then reloaded and fired again.
“So one would wonder why a suspect who is not a threat to you, a suspect who is already tied to his back, a suspect who was begging for his life, you try to shoot him the first time it did not work, you remove your magazine, arrange it again and shoot him for the second time.
Edafe said the police would not shield the officer, adding that disciplinary proceedings had already begun and that murder charges were likely.
“It is not explainable, it is not pardonable, and I want members of the public to know that the police do not cover officers like that.
“I’m very sure that guy will have his day in court and will face murder charges. I’m very sure. I will not speak for the top hierarchy of the force, but I’m certain that is the direction it is going because as we speak, he left Asaba last night by night movement.
He added that the officer had been moved from Asaba through Benin City to Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary action.
“They left Asaba to Bini to conclude his query, and they left Bini at 8pm yesterday going to Abuja. I believe, as of this morning, they are already at the force headquarters because he will be dealt with.
“There is already an ongoing section of the force disciplinary committee that will handle his case, and I believe by the end of today we will hear the outcome of that section.
“So it is not something we can explain, he’s the only one that can explain what he did, and he will use his head to carry what he has across. The music he has started playing, as I’ve always been saying, he will dance to it because that guy has a right to life.
“Every suspect has a right to life. Nobody has the monopoly of violence. Don’t just go about killing people because you are carrying firearms given to you by the government of Nigeria to protect life and property.
“It’s not making any sense to me. Then on the issue of their dress code, that’s because the surveillance team attached to the area command Effurun, that’s why they appear like that.”
