At least 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing persistent internal crises within their former party.
The mass defection was announced during plenary on Tuesday, with the lawmakers submitting separate letters to formally notify the House of their decision. They attributed their exit to what they described as unresolved disputes affecting the ADC at all levels, from national leadership down to ward structures.
Among the defectors is Yusuf Umar Datti, representing Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam Federal Constituency in Kano State, who said ongoing instability within the ADC had hindered his ability to effectively serve his constituents. Similarly, Harris Okonkwo, representing Idemili North/Idemili South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, noted that his decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and constituents.
Other lawmakers who joined the NDC include Sani Adamu (Minjibir/Ungogo, Kano); Thaddeus Attah (Eti-Osa, Lagos); Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi (Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia, Anambra); Lilian Obiageli (Awka North/Awka South, Anambra); OluwaSeyi Sowunmi (Ojo, Lagos); Peter Anekwe (Anambra East/West); Zakari Umar Mukhtari (Tarauni, Kano); George Olawande (Amuwo Odofin, Lagos); Murphy Osaro Omoruyi (Egor/Ikpoba-Okha, Edo); Umezuruike Manuchim (Port Harcourt I, Rivers); Emeka Idu (Onitsha North/South, Anambra); Jesse Onuakalusi (Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos); Ifeanyi Uzokwe (Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo, Anambra); Afam Ogene (Ogbaru, Anambra); and Kamilu Ado (Wudil/Garko, Kano).
In a separate move, Leke Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency, also left the ADC but defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The wave of defections has raised concerns among lawmakers about increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Many noted that internal party instability continues to be a major driver of such movements within the National Assembly.
The Speaker acknowledged the defections during plenary and extended his goodwill to the lawmakers in their new political parties, in line with parliamentary tradition.
Analysts say the development could significantly reshape the balance of power among minority parties in the House, with the ADC expected to lose influence in the lower chamber.
