Betty Akeredolu, widow of the late former Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on Thursday formally purchased her nomination and expression of interest forms to contest the Imo East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Her nomination forms were picked up by supporters at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
If elected, Akeredolu will represent Imo East Senatorial District in the Senate, replacing the incumbent lawmaker, Ezenwa Onyewuchi.
The development comes barely two months after the former Ondo First Lady officially joined the Labour Party, signalling a deepening involvement in partisan politics ahead of the next election cycle.
Akeredolu confirmed the move through a social media update, where she also highlighted her participation in recent high-level administrative activities of the party.
Thursday’s exercise also attracted other aspirants seeking various elective positions on the platform of the Labour Party.
Among them were Hassan Barguwa, contesting for the Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency seat in Adamawa State; Dennis Oshai, seeking the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency seat in Delta State; as well as Eric Edward and Mohammed Hayatu Atiku, both vying for seats in the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
Speaking to journalists after purchasing his nomination forms, Barguwa, a former member of the House of Representatives for Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency, commended the process and modalities put in place by the party.
He said, “We are happy with the proceedings and how the new leadership is handling the party administration.
“I also believe that the Labour Party will reclaim many seats in Adamawa State and across the North-East.”
Reacting, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, expressed satisfaction with the growing number of aspirants since the sale of forms commenced on Wednesday.
“The impressive surge in the scramble for Labour Party nomination forms for various elective offices continued today. You can also see how several aspirants seeking to contest in the 2027 general elections are thronging the party’s secretariat to purchase their nomination forms.
“So, everything is going as planned. We are very much prepared for the 2027 elections,” he stated.
