Five killed in fresh Plateau attack

At least five persons were killed on Sunday night when gunmen ambushed residents in Fan District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, fuelling fresh tension in the area.

Community members said the victims were heading home around 9pm when the assailants opened fire without warning.

“Four persons died on the spot, and another later died in the hospital,” said Pam Saidu, a resident of Fan, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association also confirmed the attack.

Its publicity secretary, Rwang Tengwong, described the killings as “unfortunate and condemnable” and urged security agencies to step up protection of lives and property in the council.

He called for urgent measures to prevent further attacks in the area, which has witnessed recurring violence in recent months.

Residents say the latest killings have heightened fear in the district, with many calling for increased patrols by security operatives.

The Plateau State Police Command had not stated the incident at press time.

Contacted on Monday, the spokesperson for the command, Alabo Alfred, did not pick up his calls as they went unanswered.
