Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) flagbearer, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The development follows Obi’s recent resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he cited internal challenges within the party.
Both politicians were formally received at the NDC national headquarters in Abuja by the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
Leaders of the party described the move as a significant boost, noting that the entry of the two high-profile figures reflects growing confidence in the NDC as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
Party insiders also revealed that the defections are part of wider political realignments currently unfolding within opposition circles, as key actors reposition ahead of the next presidential contest.
The addition of Obi and Kwankwaso is expected to reshape the opposition landscape and strengthen ongoing discussions around a possible coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Although neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has formally declared a presidential ambition, analysts believe their move signals early strategic positioning ahead of the race.
