Officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Orerokpe Division in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State have reportedly shot an unarmed man in the Okudjere-Ovu community.
The incident is said to have taken place on Thursday evening when the officers, alongside anti-cult operatives, stopped the victim over suspicion of carrying illegal drugs.
This development comes amid growing public anger following the recent killing of Oghenemine Ogidi, who was allegedly shot dead by a police officer in Effurun, also in Delta State.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the officers accused the victim of drug possession before shooting him in the leg. A video circulating online shows residents attempting to help the injured man, while the officers reportedly fled the scene to avoid a possible attack from angry youths.
Reacting to the incident, the advocacy group, Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements, popularly known as “No Justice, No Peace,” strongly condemned the shooting. The group described the act as troubling and called on both the police authorities and the Delta State Government to address the situation urgently.
The group’s National Coordinator, Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, stressed that the duty of law enforcement is to safeguard citizens rather than subject them to abuse.
He urged the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that the officers involved are identified and held accountable.
The group further described the incident as unprofessional and unfortunate, warning that failure to act could lead to continued cases of police brutality in the state.
