A former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has launched a strong verbal attack on President Bola Tinubu, insisting that both the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are politically weakened ahead of 2027.
In a post shared on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), Onochie, who is now linked with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claimed that Bola Tinubu has “destroyed” the political structures around him and that the APC has lost its influence under his leadership.
She also insisted that Tinubu has no clear path to victory in the 2027 general elections, adding that the ruling party is no longer what it used to be.
According to her post, she wrote that anything associated with Tinubu ends up being “destroyed,” adding that the APC has effectively collapsed and that the President’s political future is uncertain.
Her comments followed the circulation of an AI-generated video online showing the late former President Muhammadu Buhari interviewing Tinubu on his performance as APC leader, a clip that sparked mixed reactions across social media.
The controversy comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and stakeholders stepping up alliances and consultations.
The APC, which brought Tinubu to power in 2023, is expected to seek re-election in 2027, while opposition parties continue efforts to build coalitions to challenge the ruling party.
Despite controlling a majority of state governments through elected officials and political defections, critics argue that economic hardship, insecurity, and internal disputes may weaken the party’s electoral chances.
Onochie, a former Buhari aide, has recently become more vocal in her criticism of Tinubu and the APC, with her latest remarks adding to rising political tensions and exchanges among key political actors.
As of press time, neither the Presidency nor the APC had officially responded to her claims.
Meanwhile, Tinubu, speaking on Wednesday at the launch of “The NADECO Story” — a publication chronicling Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle — said some individuals affected by his economic reforms had expressed hostility toward him.
The book is titled The NADECO Story, associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group active during the military era.
Tinubu, represented at the event by former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, said his administration was aware that some interests opposed to subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms were unhappy with his policies.
According to him, such groups benefited from the old systems of fuel subsidy payments and multiple exchange rates, and were resisting reforms aimed at restructuring the economy.
The President maintained that despite criticism, his administration remained committed to its economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification introduced in 2023.
He also reaffirmed appreciation for NADECO figures, noting their role in Nigeria’s return to democratic rule and assuring that their contributions would not be forgotten.
