Veteran Nollywood Actress Oby Kechere Dies

Veteran Nollywood actress Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her memorable role in the hit comedy Aki na Ukwa, has passed away after a period of illness.
Her death was announced on Saturday by the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Uche Agbo, who revealed that she died on Monday, April 27, 2026.
In an official statement, the guild expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a dedicated professional and an important member of the association, particularly within its Abuja chapter where she served as Vice Chairman.
The statement noted that she had been battling a prolonged illness before her death and extended condolences to her family, colleagues, and loved ones, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.
Born in Mbaise, Imo State, Kechere studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan before joining Nollywood in 2001. She gained early recognition through roles in productions such as the August Meeting series before rising to wider fame with her comic performance in Aki na Ukwa.
