Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has accused members of the Nigerian Senate of enabling President Bola Tinubu to take actions she believes are detrimental to the country.
The outspoken activist made the remarks in a post shared on her verified 𝕏 account on Friday, where she argued that lawmakers should stop portraying themselves as victims of Nigeria’s challenges.
According to Yesufu, senators are not powerless observers but key actors who provide the President with the authority and backing to implement policies and decisions.
Her comments came in response to a statement by the senator representing Kebbi South, Garba Maidoki, who appealed to Nigerians for support, lamenting that bandits were killing residents in his constituency.
Reacting to the senator’s plea, Yesufu insisted that members of the National Assembly have a constitutional duty to influence national decisions and should therefore accept responsibility for the country’s current situation.
She argued that lawmakers cannot distance themselves from the security and governance issues facing Nigerians while continuing to approve and support the actions of the executive arm of government.
In her words, “Senators should stop infantilizing themselves! They are not victims. They are enablers of whatever evil Tinubu is carrying out in this country.”
She further added, “They are the ones giving him the power to do all the shenanigans he is currently doing.”
Yesufu’s remarks have since sparked discussions online about the role of the National Assembly in holding the executive accountable and addressing the country’s growing security and governance concerns.
