Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government to improve the welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, insisting that the current salary structure does not reflect the risks soldiers face while protecting the country.
Speaking during an interview with Trust TV, the lawmaker expressed concern over the remuneration of Nigerian soldiers, stating that many military personnel earn about ₦100,000 monthly despite operating in dangerous environments and confronting armed criminals and insurgents.
Ndume described the salary as inadequate, noting that it is roughly equivalent to 80 US dollars, an amount he believes falls far short of what military personnel deserve for the sacrifices they make in the line of duty.
According to him, expecting soldiers to defend the nation and put their lives on the line while earning such a modest income is unfair and could affect their morale.
He stressed that enhancing the welfare of military personnel through improved salaries and better conditions of service would not only motivate them but also strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity.
Speaking during the interview, Ndume said:
“A Nigerian Army soldier earns about ₦100,000 every month, which is roughly equivalent to 80 US dollars. This level of pay is too low for people serving in the military, considering the dangers they face daily.
“It’s unreasonable to expect soldiers to risk their lives, defend the country, and confront security threats while receiving such a small salary. The government should improve the welfare and pay of military personnel so they are better motivated to carry out their duties.”
