The Nigerian Navy has arrested 13 individuals and intercepted two wooden boats allegedly used for illegal mining activities in Bayelsa State.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso as part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal exploitation of natural resources and other maritime crimes across the country.
In a statement, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho said the operation followed credible intelligence reports on the movement of boats suspected to be transporting illegally mined black sand within coastal communities in Brass Local Government Area.
According to him, naval operatives intercepted the vessels at Lekeson and Liama communities, where large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand were discovered onboard.
Folorunsho disclosed that 13 crew members were arrested during the operation and linked to the illegal activity.
He noted that the successful interception highlights the Nigerian Navy’s determination to protect the nation’s maritime environment and prevent the unlawful exploitation of natural resources.
The naval officer warned that illegal mining and resource extraction continue to threaten environmental sustainability and economic development.
He reaffirmed that the Navy remains committed to intensifying operations against illegal mining, oil theft, and other maritime crimes while ensuring security and stability across Nigeria’s waterways.
Folorunsho further revealed that the seized boats, recovered black sand, and all 13 suspects have been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of the Nembe Division in line with Bayelsa State Government directives and established procedures.
The handover, he explained, was made to facilitate further investigation and possible prosecution of those involved.
He added that the Navy would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to safeguard the nation’s maritime resources and maintain safe waterways for legitimate economic activities.
The operation forms part of broader efforts by security agencies to curb illegal mining and other activities that undermine the sustainable management of Nigeria’s natural resources.
