The Nigeria Union of Teachers has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to commence an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 1, 2026, following the abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.
The union said the decision was taken to pressure authorities into intensifying efforts to secure the safe and immediate release of the victims, who were kidnapped in Orire Local Government Area.
The directive was issued in a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Wing Chairman of the union, Hassan Fatai, and the Secretary, Salami Olukayode.
According to the statement, the continued captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils has created widespread fear and anxiety among education workers across the state. It added that the situation has severely disrupted confidence in the school system, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and increased tension in affected communities.
The union explained that the strike became necessary to draw urgent attention to the need for the unconditional release of the victims. It directed all public school teachers in the state to fully comply with the industrial action and advised members to prioritize their safety while staying away from classrooms.
The NUT also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring that it would continue to engage relevant authorities until the victims are safely rescued.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and security of teachers and learners, the union stressed that the protection of school communities remains a top priority.
