United Kingdom Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly weighing his political future amid growing pressure within the Labour Party, following renewed calls for a leadership change.
According to reports, Starmer spent the weekend reflecting on whether he should continue leading both the government and the Labour Party after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham secured a convincing victory in the Makerfield contest. Burnham’s strong performance has intensified speculation about a possible leadership challenge and sparked debate within Labour ranks about the party’s future direction.
Sources close to the Prime Minister revealed that Starmer is carefully considering what would be best for both the country and the Labour Party. Concerns have reportedly been raised that a prolonged internal leadership battle could destabilize the government and distract from national priorities.
One senior ally was quoted as saying that Starmer’s chances of remaining in office had significantly diminished, suggesting there was only a slim possibility that he would continue to resist mounting pressure.
The Prime Minister is said to be holding private discussions with his wife, Victoria Starmer, at Chequers before making any final decision regarding his political future.
Despite the growing speculation, Starmer has publicly maintained that he intends to remain in office and challenge any attempt to remove him. However, Labour insiders claim that Burnham’s commanding victory, which reportedly saw him secure 55 percent of the vote in Makerfield, has weakened Starmer’s standing within the party.
Several Labour MPs reportedly believe Burnham is better positioned to take on Reform UK and its leader, Nigel Farage, in future elections. His electoral success has strengthened arguments among some party members that Labour may need a fresh face to maintain its competitiveness ahead of the next general election.
Reports also indicate that Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has advised Starmer to establish a clear timetable for his departure if he chooses to step aside, allowing for a smooth and orderly leadership transition. Other senior Labour figures are also said to support preparations for a possible handover.
A senior party source noted that Starmer is currently focused on determining what course of action would best serve both the party and the nation.
Meanwhile, not all Labour lawmakers support the growing push for Burnham to take over. Some MPs have warned against installing a new leader without a formal and transparent leadership contest, arguing that party members should be allowed to decide who leads Labour.
Nonetheless, several MPs acknowledged that support for Starmer has declined significantly in recent months. One lawmaker described the Prime Minister as increasingly isolated, while another senior Labour figure argued that dissatisfaction within the party is centered on Starmer’s leadership rather than any single challenger.
Despite the criticism, Starmer’s supporters have cautioned that forcing him out could create political turmoil and hand an advantage to opposition parties. Loyalists fear that a divisive leadership struggle could weaken Labour’s position, potentially leading to electoral setbacks and the loss of parliamentary seats gained during the party’s strong 2024 performance.
As speculation continues, attention remains focused on whether Starmer will fight to remain in office or pave the way for a new generation of Labour leadership.
