23-Year-Old Nigerian Medical Student Dies After Injuries Sustained in Russian Airstrike in Ukraine
A 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after suffering severe injuries in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to graduate from medical school.
Marian, a final-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University, was reportedly injured during a Russian aerial bombardment on June 29, 2026, when guided bombs struck the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv.
According to Kateryna Bohuslavska, popularly known as “Kate from Kharkiv,” who has been documenting events related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Marian and her close friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot ahead of their diploma ceremony when the attack occurred.
Marian was initially treated at a hospital in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for specialised medical care. Despite efforts by doctors to save her life, she later succumbed to her injuries.
In a statement mourning her death, Kharkiv National Medical University described Marian as an outstanding student whose dedication to medicine and academic excellence set her apart.
The university noted that since enrolling in 2020, she had actively pursued international academic opportunities, including internships at University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in 2025.
“She was a bright, sincere and friendly person, distinguished by her thirst for knowledge and desire to help others,” the institution said, describing her death as a heartbreaking loss to the university community.
Marian had been expected to complete her medical studies and graduate in 2026 before the tragic incident brought her academic journey to an untimely end.
Her death has once again highlighted the devastating human toll of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly on international students pursuing higher education in war-affected areas.
