A baby died in the occupied West Bank on Sunday after Israeli forces at a checkpoint prevented him from accessing urgent medical care. Israeli forces also shot dead a teenage boy in the Qalandia refugee camp on the same day.
Laila Ghannam, the Palestinian governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh province, said that Israeli forces held up the transfer of four-month-old Ahmed Maarouf Zaid for more than an hour, despite his life-threatening condition.
Doctors at the Arab Specialised Hospital confirmed his death on Sunday evening.
Ghannam said that the death of Ahmed was “a stain on the conscience of humanity” as Palestinians in the West Bank are routinely denied freedom of movement and access to healthcare in the West Bank.
Last month Israeli troops shot dead a seven month old baby near Hebron.
The Palestinian health ministry also said Israeli forces fatally shot 16-year-old Waleed Abu Sneineh in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, the second reported killing of a Palestinian teenager within a week.
Two other boys, both aged 14, were injured in the incident at the Qalandia refugee camp near Ramallah, the ministry said.
“Sixteen year old Waleed Nidal Waleed Abu Sneineh was pronounced dead after being shot by Israeli forces,” the ministry said.
“Two other children sustained gunshot wounds to… lower limbs in the same incident.”
The Israeli military did not espond to a request for comment.
Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 1,087 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 2023, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry data.
