Hany Shenouda, the pioneering Egyptian composer, producer and founder of the iconic band Al-Masryeen, has died at the age of 83.
Widely regarded as one of the architects of modern Egyptian music, Shenouda helped transform the country’s popular music scene, launched the careers of some of its biggest stars and left an enduring legacy that shaped generations of artists.
Born in Egypt’s Nile Delta in 1943, Shenouda rose to prominence in the late 1970s when he founded Al-Masryeen, a six-piece band that blended traditional Egyptian melodies with Western influences including psychedelic rock, disco and funk.
The group produced a string of enduring hits, including Sah, Mafatshe Leh and Hazeny, and is credited with ushering in a new era of Egyptian pop music.
From the 1980s onwards, Shenouda became one of Egypt’s most sought-after composers and producers, writing more than 900 songs and collaborating with many of the Arab world’s most celebrated performers, including Abdel Halim Hafez, Ahmed Adaweya and Nagat.
He was also instrumental in discovering and nurturing new talent. Shenouda produced Mohamed Mounir’s debut album, Allamouni Eneiki, helping launch the singer’s career, and famously persuaded a young Amr Diab to pursue music before helping him break into the industry.
His influence extended beyond the recording studio into Egyptian cinema, where he composed scores for a number of acclaimed films, including Al-Mashbouh (1981), Al-Mouled (1989) and Shams el-Zanati (1991), starring Adel Emam.
Shenouda’s music has continued to resonate with younger audiences in recent years. His compositions featured in the acclaimed US comedy-drama series Ramy (2019–2022), introducing his work to a new international generation.
His death marks the end of a career spanning more than five decades, during which he helped redefine the sound of modern Egyptian music.
