The late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral prayers drew Iran’s top officials, but his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, stayed out of public view as ceremonies were underway.
In day two of the funeral procession, Ali Khamenei’s sons Masoud, Meysam, and Mostafa, who haven’t been seen since the war, made their public appearances.
Revolutionary Guard head Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who had only been photographed for the first time on Thursday since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran, could be seen in the crowd, flanked by plainclothes security forces, as he wore a black baseball cap.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Esmail Qaani, who leads the Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force, also attended.
Their appearances came as posters and graffiti at the Grand Mosalla called for the killing of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to be in hiding after reportedly being wounded in the airstrike that killed his father.
Israel has threatened to kill him as well as he leads a theocracy now negotiating with the United States over a permanent end to the war and over Iran strangling traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global energy supplies.
Prayers were also held for four members of Khamenei’s family who were killed in the joint US-Israeli strike on 28 February, including his granddaughter.
