Peter Obi says President Bola Tinubu has given security his best shot — but his best isn’t good enough, and it’s time for him to step aside.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate made the comments in a YouTube interview with Chude Jideonwo on Thursday, weighing in on remarks by RCCG General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye about Tinubu’s handling of insecurity.
Obi backed Adeboye’s assessment that Tinubu has tried his best, but pushed the point further.
“Somebody asked me yesterday, they said Pastor Adeboye said Tinubu has tried his best and he’s not happy. And I said, no, Pastor Adeboye remains a very revered, respected religious father, whom I believe in his genuineness and goodness,” Obi said. “And what he said was correct. He has tried his best. He’s trying his best. That’s it. The question to ask is: is his best good enough? That leads to the issue of capacity.”
For Obi, effort isn’t the problem — capacity is. He listed the qualities he says Nigeria’s leadership crisis demands: competence, capacity, compassion, commitment, character.
“President Tinubu is tired. He needs to go home and rest,” he said.
The former Anambra governor asked Nigerians to weigh his own track record against his current proposals ahead of 2027.
“It’s for you to look at my past and look at what I’m saying now,” he said.
Adeboye had earlier defended Tinubu against criticism over worsening insecurity, arguing the President fulfilled his role by directing the military rather than leading operations personally. Still, the cleric flagged the deteriorating security situation and pressed the government to step up the fight against terrorism, kidnapping and their sponsors.
