The Enugu State Government has told residents of the state to stay safe during the raining season.
The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Uchenna Agbo, said this in a statement he issued on Friday.
In the statement made available to newsmen, Agbo said: “The Enugu State Government wishes to remind the good people and residents of the state that as the rainy season intensifies, the risk of flooding in many parts of the state also increases.
“We therefore urge everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect lives, property, and the environment.
“You are strongly advised not to dump refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams, or rivers.
“Such irresponsible practices obstruct the free flow of water, resulting in avoidable flooding that threatens homes, businesses, public infrastructure, and human lives.
“We call on households, landlords, business owners, and community leaders to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that all drainage channels and waterways within their neighbourhoods remain free of refuse and other obstructions.
“Those living in flood-prone communities should pay close attention to weather advisories and be prepared to relocate to safer locations whenever the need arises.
“Members of the public are also advised never to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, as their depth and strength may be difficult to determine and could pose grave danger.
“Flood prevention is a collective responsibility.
“By keeping our environment clean and our drainage systems unobstructed, we can significantly reduce the risk of flooding and safeguard our communities.
“The Enugu State Government counts on the cooperation of the general public as we work together to keep our state safe throughout this rainy season.
