The Edo State Police Command has ordered a full investigation into allegations that some police officers attached to the Okpella Police Division extorted ₦1 million from a group of young men.
The development followed a video circulating on social media in which the alleged victims accused the officers of arresting them on suspicion of cultism and demanding ₦1 million before releasing them.
According to the complainants, they were allegedly detained after being accused of belonging to a cult group, after which the officers reportedly demanded money for their release.
Following the video, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Patrick Daaor, directed that the allegations be thoroughly investigated.
The command said the officers allegedly linked to the incident had been identified and summoned to the State Police Command Headquarters to explain their roles in the matter.
The Police Public Relations Officer also invited the alleged victims to appear before the investigative team and provide detailed accounts of what transpired.
CP Daaor said the command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of power or other forms of misconduct by police personnel.
He assured the public that any officer found culpable after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with existing laws and police regulations.
The Commissioner further stated that legitimate complaints against police officers would be investigated and would not be ignored.
The command urged members of the public who experience harassment, extortion, unprofessional conduct or other forms of misconduct by police personnel to report such incidents through the appropriate channels, including the Complaint Response Unit.
The police said the investigation would determine the facts of the case and establish whether the officers involved committed any offence.
