Fire Guts SPAR Shopping Outlet in Calabar

A fire outbreak has been reported at the SPAR shopping outlet in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday morning.

The blaze, which reportedly started inside the shopping complex, sent thick smoke across parts of the city and could be seen from Barracks Road, about 100 yards from the scene.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known as of the time of filing this report. However, the outlet houses several activities, including bread baking, food preparation and various electrical operations.

A journalist at the scene, Victoria, said about three fire service trucks had arrived and were working to contain the flames using water from the SPAR borehole.

She said there was confusion around the car park as people gathered to observe the incident, adding that it was unclear whether anyone was trapped inside the building.

According to her, fire service officials at the scene declined to comment on the situation.

SPAR, a major grocery and retail outlet, is located in the heart of Calabar, near Watt Market and Bogobiri, an area known for its Hausa-Fulani community. The outlet commenced operations in the city in 2012.

Further details on the extent of damage, possible casualties and the cause of the fire were not immediately available.
