Gbenga Daniel, Sanwo-Olu, Lai Mohammed to Lead Debate on 2027 Elections, Insecurity
Former Ogun State Governor and Senator, Gbenga Daniel, alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, will headline discussions on Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, insecurity and the country’s economic challenges at the seventh annual Freedom Online lecture scheduled for September 3 in Lagos.
The lecture, organised by Freedom Online, will examine the challenges confronting Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 elections, with particular emphasis on insecurity and its implications for the democratic process and national development.
According to the organisers, the event will explore how Nigeria can conduct credible and acceptable elections amid growing security concerns, while also considering the political, economic and social consequences of electoral violence and insecurity.
Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Freedom Online, Gabriel Akinadewo, said the decision to focus on insecurity was informed by the growing threat it poses to the country.
He said insecurity, including electoral thuggery, had contributed to poverty, underdevelopment and other social problems, warning that the outcome of the 2027 elections could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s future.
Akinadewo also raised questions about the conduct and outcome of the 2027 elections, including whether the process would be broadly accepted and whether it would provide a solid foundation for the country’s future.
Sanwo-Olu is expected to serve as the Special Guest Speaker at the event, while Lai Mohammed will chair the occasion. Daniel, who served as governor of Ogun State and is currently a senator, will attend as Special Guest of Honour.
The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard, Eze Anaba, is expected to serve as Chief Host.
The organisers said the lecture would provide an opportunity for stakeholders to examine the roles of politicians, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission in ensuring that the 2027 electoral process is peaceful, credible and acceptable to Nigerians.
The discussions are expected to place the 2027 elections within the broader context of Nigeria’s security, economic and democratic challenges as the country prepares for another major electoral cycle.
