Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online and President Emeritus of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), has reportedly died.
Oladipo was said to have experienced a sudden health challenge on Tuesday evening while on his way to a meeting. According to reports, he contacted his doctor through someone nearby, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
His death reportedly came as a shock to those around him, particularly as he had remained active and was said to have interacted with several people earlier in the day.
The veteran journalist had also survived a serious incident in March 2025 when a tanker fire occurred around the Otedola Bridge. Oladipo, his wife and daughter reportedly escaped the incident, while his mechanic, Rotimi Olaleye, died. His vehicle was also destroyed in the fire.
Oladipo was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s digital media industry and was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of organised online publishing in the country.
He founded The Eagle Online in January 2011 and served as its Publisher and Chief Executive Officer. He was also instrumental in the development of GOCOP, which was established in 2013 and initially operated under the name Nigerian Online Publishers’ Association.
Oladipo later became GOCOP’s second president in 2017 and served two consecutive two-year terms before handing over to Maureen Chigbo, publisher of Realnews, in October 2021.
Even after leaving office, he remained actively involved in the guild. At the 2024 GOCOP conference, he was recognised as President Emeritus and served as chairman of the organisation’s Ombudsman and Disciplinary Committee.
During the conference, he also spoke on website optimisation and the need for online publishers to strengthen their digital platforms.
Beyond journalism and GOCOP, Oladipo was involved in initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration among media professionals. In October 2024, he was inaugurated as the pioneer President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), alongside Nkanu Egbe and Dolapo Otegbayi.
The cooperative, inaugurated by the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, was established to encourage resource sharing, professional training, collaboration and networking among media practitioners.
Oladipo’s contribution to Nigeria’s digital journalism landscape was widely acknowledged. A profile published to mark his 55th birthday described him as a pioneer of digital journalism, team builder and strategist, while highlighting his contributions to the growth of GOCOP.
He was also credited with helping to establish GOCOP’s official website and serving as the organisation’s chief scribe before eventually becoming its president.
His reported death marks a significant loss to Nigeria’s online publishing industry, where he played a prominent role in promoting professional and organised digital journalism.
