The kidnappers holding Chief Sir Joseph Ezeokafor, chairman of Jezco Group and father of Nigerian social media personality Jowizaza, have reportedly increased their ransom demand from ₦700 million to ₦1.5 billion.
Ezeokafor, a septuagenarian businessman, was reportedly abducted in Anambra State about a week ago while on his way to a prayer ground as part of his annual spiritual retreat.
According to reports, the kidnappers initially contacted the businessman’s family and demanded ₦700 million for his release. The family was said to have accepted the demand in the hope of securing his safe return.
However, the abductors reportedly later raised the ransom to ₦1.5 billion, further complicating efforts to secure Ezeokafor’s freedom.
A source familiar with the situation said the family has continued to explore avenues for negotiation, but communication with the kidnappers has reportedly broken down.
Attempts to re-establish contact with the abductors have so far been unsuccessful, heightening concerns among the businessman’s relatives over his safety.
Ezeokafor was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Tuesday after leaving his residence for the prayer ground without his usual security personnel.
His decision to travel without his security detail reportedly exposed him to the attackers, who allegedly seized the opportunity to abduct him.
The family is said to be continuing efforts to restore communication with the kidnappers and secure the businessman’s release.
