The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has pledged his support for the newly established Iru Ekun Security Network by donating ₦100 million and a brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicle to strengthen its operations across the South West.
The donation was announced as Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, revealed plans to organise a regional security summit for traditional rulers in the South West. The summit, which will be hosted by the Ooni in Ile-Ife, is expected to focus on security, regional unity, and other issues aimed at protecting the interests of the Yoruba people.
Speaking in a statement issued on Wednesday through his media office, Igboho said the Ooni’s financial and logistical support demonstrates the monarch’s commitment to improving community-based security and promoting lasting peace across the region.
The activist, who officially launched the Iru Ekun Security Network in Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday, described traditional rulers as critical partners in the fight against insecurity and the protection of local communities.
According to him, the support from the Ooni would boost the confidence and effectiveness of the security outfit as it works alongside government security agencies.
“This immense support from the foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland will encourage us to remain steadfast in our mission of creating a safer environment for residents in both urban and rural communities.
“Although the responsibility of ensuring security in collaboration with the Police, the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other paramilitary agencies is enormous, this generous support from the Ooni will greatly enhance our operations and make them more effective,” he said.
Igboho also vowed that the security outfit would continue to combat criminal activities within the framework of the law, stressing that farmers should no longer be forced to abandon their farmlands because of killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence.
He added that the Iru Ekun Security Network has continued to receive encouragement from respected Nigerians, including prominent citizens, members of the judiciary, technocrats, and other influential individuals who believe in its vision of building a peaceful and secure society.
Beyond the Ooni’s donation, Igboho disclosed that preparations were underway for a landmark gathering of traditional rulers from across the South West.
According to him, the summit will provide an opportunity for monarchs to deliberate on strategies for improving security, fostering unity, and addressing other challenges affecting Yorubaland.
Meanwhile, the Ooni described Sunday Igboho as a courageous and distinguished son of Oduduwa whose efforts to promote peace and security deserve public support.
Receiving the activist at the palace in Ile-Ife, Oba Ogunwusi commended the establishment of the Iru Ekun Security Network, noting that safeguarding lives and property is a shared responsibility that goes beyond political, religious, or ideological affiliations.
“I commend Chief Sunday Igboho for taking this bold initiative to strengthen community security. Protecting our people is a collective responsibility that transcends politics, religion, and ideology. Every genuine effort aimed at preserving lives and maintaining peace deserves encouragement,” the monarch said.
The Ooni further urged Yoruba sons and daughters, traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals, business owners, traditionalists, and other stakeholders at home and abroad to support the security network in the collective effort to improve safety and stability across the South West.
