Russian Chess Official Dies After Abuja Trip as Family Links Death to Severe Malaria
A 36-year-old Russian chess official, Sergei Indeikin, has died after falling critically ill following a work trip to Abuja, with his family and Russian media reports linking his death to severe malaria.
Indeikin, an operational manager and delegate of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), was in Nigeria for the inaugural FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held in Abuja from August 1 to 8.
FIDE announced his death on August 23, describing it as the result of a “sudden illness” but did not disclose the specific medical condition responsible for his death.
However, Russian media reports quoting Indeikin’s parents said he developed a rapidly progressing form of severe malaria after the Abuja assignment.
According to his father, Alexander Indeikin, Sergei travelled from Abuja to Uzbekistan after the tournament and began feeling unwell there. He subsequently travelled through Moscow to Perm, where his condition deteriorated further.
He was eventually rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
His mother, Tatiana, reportedly described the illness as extremely rapid and severe, saying her son had been admitted to hospital only after the disease had progressed significantly.
Some Russian media reports further claimed that Indeikin may have contracted malaria after being bitten by an infected mosquito while in Nigeria. That claim, however, has not been independently confirmed by FIDE or Nigerian health authorities.
Indeikin had worked with FIDE since 2021 and was involved in the organisation of major international competitions, including World Championship matches, World Cups, Candidates Tournaments and World Rapid and Blitz Championships.
His Abuja assignment was particularly significant as the tournament was the first FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Championship staged in Africa.
FIDE described Indeikin as a valued member of its operations team and expressed condolences to his wife, young daughter, family, friends and colleagues.
While his family and Russian media have attributed his death to severe malaria allegedly contracted during his Nigeria trip, the official position from FIDE remains that he died following a sudden illness.
The circumstances surrounding where and when he contracted the illness therefore remain unconfirmed publicly.
