African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has escalated a public clash with Afrobeats star Davido, turning an insult from the singer back on his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The exchange erupted on Friday, August 14, hours before Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, after Sowore criticised Adeleke’s administration, describing the state capital, Osogbo, as lacking basic infrastructure.
Davido responded by calling the activist “arindin,” a Yoruba term used to describe someone regarded as foolish.
Sowore did not back down. In a post on X, he wrote: “The real arindin is your uncle, @AAdeleke_01,” before launching a broader attack on the governor’s record.
Sowore Questions Adeleke’s Credentials
The AAC candidate went further, alleging that Adeleke returned to obtain an equivalent of a General Educational Development certificate after his time as a senator. The claim remains unverified and has not been independently confirmed.
Sowore also accused Adeleke of backing President Bola Tinubu for political convenience, alleging the governor’s loyalty was tied to preserving his family’s grip on power in Osun State. He described political elites broadly as “oppressive, corrupt, incompetent, and entitled,” warning that Nigerians would eventually push back.
Sowore’s TV Appearance Set the Stage
The clash builds on remarks Sowore made during a television interview on Thursday, where he claimed Adeleke was not fully in charge of his own administration. He alleged that the governor’s sister and elder brother, Adedeji Adeleke, wielded significant influence over government affairs — claims that have not been independently substantiated.
Sowore also disputed the administration’s claims of road infrastructure development, saying he had seen no evidence of the scale being advertised.
A Personal Turn Days Before the Polls
Davido’s intervention marked a rare instance of the singer stepping directly into a political dispute involving a close relative. His comeback, though brief, shifted the conversation from policy debate to a personal exchange between two high-profile figures.
The online spat has since divided Nigerians, with reactions split between Adeleke loyalists and Sowore’s supporters.
INEC has scheduled the Osun governorship election for August 15, 2026, with Adeleke seeking re-election. The Sowore-Davido exchange adds a personal edge to what was already a tightly contested race, as parties make final appeals to voters ahead of polling.
