A woman visiting an inmate at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been arrested after correctional officers allegedly found substances suspected to be an illicit psychoactive drug concealed inside a sachet of beverage.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine security screening at the entrance of the custodial facility.
The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed the arrest in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka.
According to the Service, the woman arrived at about 1:33 p.m. to visit an inmate on death row when officers subjected her belongings to the mandatory screening process.
During the search, personnel reportedly discovered a sachet of Milo containing substances suspected to be “colos,” a street name for a psychoactive substance.
The Nigerian Correctional Service said the discovery demonstrated the vigilance of its officers and their commitment to preventing prohibited items from entering custodial facilities.
Following her arrest, the woman was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with the law.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers involved in the arrest, describing their conduct as a reflection of professionalism and alertness.
Adesina reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and other criminal activities within correctional centres.
He stressed that custodial facilities are intended to support the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and must not become channels for the distribution of illicit substances.
The command also warned visitors and members of the public against attempting to compromise security by bringing prohibited items into correctional facilities.
It added that anyone caught engaging in such acts would be dealt with according to the law.
