23-year-old divorcee returns bride price via bank transfer after ex-husband refused to accept it

A 23-year-old Nigerian lady who got married as a teenager has revealed how she returned her bride price to her estranged husband through a bank transfer after he allegedly refused to accept it from her family.

The woman, identified as Ugwu Tessy, said she got married in 2020 and is now 23 years old. She had three children during the marriage before the relationship ended.

Lady Returns Bride Price Herself

According to Tessy, efforts by her kinsmen and parents to return the bride price to her former husband were unsuccessful because he allegedly refused to accept it.

She explained that this became a concern because, traditionally, the return of the bride price was necessary for the marriage to be formally dissolved.

Now in a new relationship, Tessy said she decided to return the money herself rather than continue waiting for her ex-husband to accept it from her family.

On September 9, 2026, she shared a screenshot of the bank transfer on Facebook, showing that she had transferred the amount to her former husband.

The narration attached to the transaction read:

“I Ugwu Nnenna Theresa Ex-wife of Ejike Tobias Ugwuoke. Have Single-handedly returned the Bride Price he paid on my Head on 2/1/2020 which he Rejected to Collect From My Umunna & Parents & The laws. I Single-HANDEDLY Returned it Myself Today Being 9/9/2026.”

Tessy appeared to emphasise that she had taken the step herself after her former husband allegedly rejected attempts by her family to return the bride price.

Her action has attracted attention on social media, with some users sharing similar experiences involving the return of bride price after a marriage ended.
