The Kano State House of Assembly has urged the state government to provide emergency assistance to rice farmers and other residents affected by flooding in Shuwaki, Tudun Wada Local Government Area.
The call followed a motion moved during Monday’s plenary by the member representing Tudun Wada Constituency, Sule Shuwaki, and presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.
Shuwaki said a heavy downpour last Thursday triggered flooding that destroyed more than 200 rice farms in the community.
He also said the flooding washed away a historic bridge along the Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road, disrupting movement and affecting residents, including students.
“The downpour which happened on Thursday has destroyed over 200 rice farms following flooding in Shuwaki. The flooding has also washed a bridge along Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road,” Shuwaki said.
According to the lawmaker, the damaged bridge has affected the socio-economic activities of residents by restricting access to farms and movement between communities.
He urged the government to urgently provide relief materials and other assistance to farmers and residents affected by the disaster.
“We are appealing to the state government to come to the aid of the affected farmers and other residents affected by flooding to alleviate their sufferings,” he said.
Shuwaki also called for the immediate reconstruction of the damaged bridge and road to restore access and ease the hardship faced by residents.
The motion was seconded by the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Abdullahi Kara.
Following deliberations, the House adopted the motion and urged the state government to take urgent action to address the situation.
