A 20-year-old man and his 18-year-old accomplice have been arrested by the Gombe State Police Command over the alleged killing of a mother of five, Aishatu Salisu, during a suspected attempt to snatch her mobile phone.
Aishatu was reportedly stabbed during the attack at her residence in Wuro Shie Quarters, Gombe, in the early hours of Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 4:35am when suspected assailants allegedly invaded the residence of Inspector Salisu Waziri, a police officer attached to the Safer Highway Patrol.
According to the police, the attackers allegedly attempted to dispossess Aishatu of her mobile phone after gaining access to the residence.
The deceased reportedly raised an alarm during the attack, prompting one of the suspects to allegedly stab her with a machete before the assailants fled.
The attackers, however, reportedly left the phone behind as they escaped.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said the Pantami Divisional Patrol Team was immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving information about the attack.
Abdullahi said the victim was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where she was pronounced dead.
He disclosed that the police subsequently intensified efforts to track down those allegedly responsible for the killing, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
The suspects were identified as 20-year-old Muhammad Bashir Sale, also known as “Full,” and 18-year-old Musa Sale Ahmad, alias “Abba,” both residents of Wuro Shie Quarters, Gombe.
The police spokesperson said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects had allegedly confessed to their involvement in the incident.
He added that a sharp knife was recovered as an exhibit in connection with the investigation.
Abdullahi stated that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Gombe, for further investigation.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the nearest police formation.
Meanwhile, family members have been thrown into mourning following the death of Aishatu, who was said to have left behind five young children.
A family member, Usman Ismaila, described her death as a painful loss to the family and those who knew her.
