Ijebu-Remo State Creation: Senator Gbenga Daniel Secures Royal Backing at Awujale Palace
The campaign for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State, led by His Excellency, The Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel FNSE FAEng, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has taken a decisive step forward. The Senator, who also chairs the Implementation Committee on the Creation of a New State out of the Old Ijebu Province, convened a landmark meeting of royal fathers and prominent leaders across Ijebuland at the Palace of the Awujale in Ijebu-Ode.
Led by the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, His Royal Majesty Oba Lawrence Adebajo, the gathering brought together the Ogbeni-Oja of Ijebuland and Chairman of the Awujale Interregnum Council, Olorogun Sonny Kuku, alongside the Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, the Dagburewe of Idowa, and other members of the Ijebu Traditional Council. Former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Senator Adegbenga Kaka, and Chief Funlola Okunowo were also in attendance.
At the end of deliberations, the royal fathers declared their full support for the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, with Ijebu-Ode as the capital . The stakeholders resolved to work collectively for the actualisation of the new state, stressing unity, coordination and engagement among traditional institutions and community leaders.
This development builds on months of groundwork. Senator Daniel first sponsored the state creation bill in the Senate in November 2024, which passed first reading, and later announced a consensus on the name “Ijebu-Remo” following the Remo Traditional Council’s endorsement . In January 2026, he warned that only unity of purpose among the nine local governments of the old province could guarantee success .
With 75 senators now reported to back the proposal—surpassing the constitutional threshold—the Ijebu-Remo State dream appears closer than ever to reality.
