A police officer has been killed after he was knocked down and dragged underneath a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on September 26, at about 2:20pm along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when police officers on stop-and-search duty signalled a Lexus ES 350, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, to stop.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed the incident on Monday during a press briefing on the achievements recorded by the command in September 2026.
According to him, the driver, identified as 21-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side.
Fatai said the officer was knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to make the driver stop.
The driver was eventually chased and arrested, while the injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
However, Sergeant Okediji, who sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries, was pronounced dead on arrival at LASUTH.
His remains have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The vehicle has also been recovered to the police station.
