The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has warned traders, manufacturers and service providers against engaging in unfair trade practices in the state.
The agency, in a statement issued on Monday, said it would not tolerate deceptive pricing, misleading advertisements, false promotions or the sale of counterfeit, substandard and expired products to consumers.
The statement quoted the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, as warning businesses to comply with consumer protection standards and ensure that customers receive value for their money.
LASCOPA urged consumers to know their rights and responsibilities and to demand value for the money they spend on goods and services.
The agency also encouraged consumers who experience unfair or deceptive business practices to report their grievances for appropriate action.
THE WHISTLER reports that LASCOPA recently warned consumers against falling victim to bait advertising, a deceptive practice in which sellers use attractive, low-priced offers to lure customers, then claim the advertised products are “out of stock” and direct them to more expensive alternatives.
According to the agency, bait advertising involves businesses advertising products at low prices to attract consumers, only to inform them that the products are unavailable when customers attempt to purchase them, and then promoting higher-priced alternatives.
