A Nigerian man, Chukwuebuka Abazu, has expressed disappointment after buying what he believed was shawarma during a church harvest programme, only to discover that it contained cucumber.
In a Facebook post, Abazu said he attended his first church service since August and bought two portions of the food after a fundraiser at the harvest event repeatedly advertised it as shawarma.
He said he took the food home and asked his sister to heat it before he could eat it as an appetiser. However, when he unwrapped it, he was surprised to find cucumber inside.
Abazu said he had initially assumed the unusual texture was due to a different type of shawarma bread, explaining that he trusted the church’s description of the item.
“If you told me it’s cucumber, I will still support the church but definitely not in the same way I would do for shawarma. I think this is deception.”
The Facebook user said he felt scammed by the experience, adding that he was unhappy with what happened despite his willingness to support the church financially.
He also joked that, going forward, he would unwrap anything he bought from the church before leaving the premises.
“Anything I buy from church from now on, I will unwrap it inside church.”
