The Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to generate and distribute 8,000 megawatts of electricity if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Obi made the pledge on Monday at the NDC town hall meeting in Sokoto, where he unveiled key aspects of his agenda and interacted with residents on the challenges confronting the country.
He said increasing electricity supply would enable industries to thrive, boost economic productivity and create an environment for businesses to grow.
The former Anambra State governor also identified corruption and mismanagement of public resources as major challenges facing Nigeria, while promising to prioritise insecurity, job creation, education and agricultural development under his proposed administration.
He pledged to promote national unity and move away from what he described as tribal and religious politics.
“We will unite this country. Because we need unity. We do not want this politics of tribalism, politics of religion. We want politics of unity, politics of love, politics of care,” he said.
He said his proposed administration would adopt a demand-driven approach to governance, with leaders expected to listen to citizens and respond to their actual needs.
According to him, the purpose of the Sokoto town hall was to hear directly from residents about their challenges rather than engage in conventional campaign activities.
“We are not here for campaign. We are here to listen to you. For you to tell us what is wrong, he added.
He criticised the practice of politicians presenting elaborate manifestos during election campaigns and later giving excuses after assuming office, saying he wanted to end such a pattern.
He said his administration would operate on the principle of partnership between the president and vice president, describing the proposed leadership structure as one based on teamwork.
“Our presidency will be the first one where the president and the vice president will partner in progress.
Speaking at the event, the NDC vice presidential candidate, Engr. Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, said a vote for Obi would represent support for unity and progress.
Kwankwaso also attributed the large turnout at the meeting to what he described as growing acceptance of the party, which was registered less than a year ago.
Earlier, the NDC Chairman in Sokoto State, Alhaji Sani Bello Yabo, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the state ahead of the 2027 election.
He urged Sokoto residents to come out in large numbers to vote and protect their votes during the election.
