Ondo State Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, has urged inmates at correctional facilities across the state to use their time in custody to acquire educational and vocational skills that can help them build better lives after their release.
Adelami made the call on Saturday when he visited the Olokuta Medium Security Correctional Centre in Akure, where he interacted with inmates and offered encouragement, spiritual guidance and welfare support, including food items.
The Deputy Governor, who serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Prison Fellowship Nigeria, encouraged the inmates to strengthen their relationship with God and take advantage of the rehabilitation programmes available at the correctional centre.
He advised them not to allow their past mistakes to determine their future, but instead use their experiences as lessons for personal growth.
“Please seek God, strengthen your faith and use this opportunity to acquire skills that will make you self-reliant when you regain your freedom.
“Do not allow the mistakes of your past to define your future; let them become lessons that will guide you towards a better life,” Adelami said.
He noted that access to vocational and educational training was important in helping inmates successfully reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.
According to him, acquiring practical skills would give the inmates better opportunities to earn a legitimate livelihood and become productive members of society upon their release.
Adelami therefore urged the inmates to take their rehabilitation seriously and make the most of the opportunities provided during their time at the correctional facility.
