Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has hailed Rodri as the “Messi of Spanish football” following the midfielder’s high-profile move from Manchester City to Barcelona.
Rodri’s switch to Barcelona has emerged as one of the defining transfers of 2026, with the midfielder joining the Catalan club after a spectacular individual campaign at the recent World Cup.
The Spain international was instrumental during the tournament, where his commanding performances earned him the Golden Ball.
Spain eventually faced Argentina in the final, with Rodri further cementing his status as one of the leading players in his position.
Following his move to Catalonia, De la Fuente has backed the midfielder to adapt quickly and continue to thrive alongside several of his Spain teammates.
Speaking to Radio Marca, the Spain boss highlighted Rodri’s importance to both club and country while dismissing concerns over his transition to a new domestic environment.
“It will be easier for him to adapt, as Rodri is the Messi of Spanish football, so he will adapt well to any team, in any circumstance,” De la Fuente explained.
“He is the best in the world in his position.”
De la Fuente also expressed his delight at seeing top Spanish players return to La Liga, saying their presence would strengthen the domestic competition.
“What I celebrate is that these great footballers are in La Liga, because it makes the league greater, because it makes the best players in the world, who are our footballers, the Spaniards, compete here in Spanish clubs.
“I would welcome it if many who are still abroad could return here to demonstrate the capacity, talent, and great footballing class they possess.”
Rodri will now look to begin a new chapter with Barcelona after his move from Manchester City, with De la Fuente confident that the midfielder’s quality will allow him to succeed regardless of the tactical environment.
