The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced urgent rehabilitation of vandalised sections of the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV double-circuit transmission line in Akwa Ibom State.
The rehabilitation covers Towers J4 and N9 to N12, which were affected by recent acts of vandalism along the transmission route.
Speaking during the inspection of the project site, the Regional Manager, Engr. Nasir Bello, said the inspection was aimed at ensuring that the rehabilitation works complied strictly with approved engineering specifications.
Represented by the Assistant General Manager, Transmission, Port Harcourt Region, Dr. Ubani Raymond, Bello said the inspection would also enable the team to identify areas requiring immediate adjustments to ensure quality and timely completion of the project.
He disclosed that significant progress had already been recorded, noting that the vandalised towers had been completely dismantled and their bases recast.
The TCN official appealed to residents of Ikot Abasi to remain vigilant and take an active role in protecting critical power infrastructure in their communities.
He urged residents to report suspicious activities around transmission facilities to the relevant authorities, stressing that the protection of electricity infrastructure was a shared responsibility.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engr. Azuh Lucky, stressed the need for continuous monitoring of the rehabilitation works to ensure compliance with engineering standards.
Lucky commended TCN management for engaging two contractors to accelerate the project, but noted that difficult terrain and persistent rainfall had affected the pace of construction.
The Principal Manager, Uyo Work Centre, Engr. Eguaikhide Clement, also expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far.
He commended the contractors for their commitment to the project and their understanding of the need to complete the rehabilitation works as quickly as possible.
