President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after spending about four weeks in Europe, assuring Nigerians that he is healthy, strong and ready to resume his official duties.
Tinubu spoke on Tuesday evening shortly after arriving in Lagos from Paris, France, where he spent the final part of his extended working vacation.
The President was responding to questions from journalists concerning reports and concerns about his health while he was away from the country.
“Rumours will always emanate from politics. I am hale and strong. I am ready to work. The fact remains that I am here, healthy, sound and ready to go,” Tinubu said.
The President departed Nigeria on August 30 for London before travelling to Paris. The Presidency described the trip as a working vacation.
His stay abroad was later extended by a few days before he returned to Nigeria on Tuesday.
Tinubu’s prolonged absence generated political and public debate, particularly over the length of his stay outside the country and his decision not to personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Presidency, however, said the President remained in contact with government officials in Nigeria and continued to oversee the affairs of the country while abroad.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at several official engagements, including the United Nations General Assembly.
During his stay in France, Tinubu held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
The Presidency also said the President used the period to engage investors and discuss major investment initiatives, including the proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port in Ogun State.
Following his return, Tinubu is expected to remain in Lagos for activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
He is scheduled to participate in official engagements ahead of the October 1 celebrations before returning to Abuja.
