US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will stop using the term “artificial intelligence” in official government documents, replacing it with “super intelligence.”
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump argued that the word “artificial” undermines the technology by making it sound fake.
“The use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake. It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful,” he said.
He announced that all US government documents would adopt the new terminology going forward, expressing hope that other countries would follow suit.
“From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term super, as opposed to artificial,” Trump said, shortening it to “SI” for super intelligence.
The president used the same address to push back against growing calls for stricter global regulation of AI, insisting the US would push the technology forward rather than hold it back. He dismissed warnings from critics who predict AI could pose existential risks, likening their concerns to past alarm over climate change.
Trump argued that whichever nation dominates advanced AI development would gain a decisive global edge, claiming the US currently holds a significant lead over China and other competitors.
He pledged not to “stifle” the sector’s growth, comparing its potential impact to the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the internet. While ruling out heavy-handed restrictions, Trump said the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies would monitor the technology as needed.
Notably, “superintelligence” already carries a specific meaning within AI research circles, typically describing systems that surpass human cognitive abilities — a definition distinct from the branding Trump is proposing.
