President Bola Tinubu is reportedly backing the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has reportedly caused tension within the All Progressives Congress (APC), with members divided over Wike’s political activities and the coalition’s relationship with the ruling party.
The Rainbow Coalition has attracted support from some APC figures, including party members who have left the APC or expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the party’s primaries.
An unnamed APC national leader, speaking to Punch, described the coalition as an alternative platform for aggrieved APC members who may consider joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to the APC leader, some politicians who are unhappy with developments in the ruling party are choosing to work with Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rather than moving to the ADC.
The source claimed that President Tinubu is comfortable with Wike’s activities and that several APC leaders are supporting the FCT minister.
“Wike has the support of the President on his Rainbow Coalition,” the source said, adding that the coalition could provide an alternative platform for APC members dissatisfied with the party’s internal processes.
The source further claimed that some politicians who left the APC for the ADC are viewed differently from those who move to the PDP, arguing that Wike’s political platform could still support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The development comes after the Progressive Governors Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, reportedly described the Rainbow Coalition as a threat to Tinubu’s re-election.
However, another APC official said the party’s primary focus remained securing victory for Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The official argued that Wike remained an important mobiliser for the President and said APC governors should have handled disagreements arising from the party’s primaries more effectively.
The official also suggested that the political activities of Wike and the APC governors should be viewed within the broader objective of securing Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
