55-Year-Old Escapes Unhurt As Lagos Train Crushes Car

A 55-year-old motorist escaped unhurt Friday morning after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD Railway Line in Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, saying the train was travelling towards Agege when the collision involving the Honda car, with registration number EKY 902 JT, occurred.

According to the authority, the collision left the car extensively damaged, rendering it virtually a write-off. However, no injuries or casualties were reported at the scene.

LASTMA operatives, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway track, enabling the train to continue its journey towards Agege.

“The collision inflicted extensive and irreparable damage on the Honda car rendered it virtually a complete write-off.

“Notwithstanding the severity of the impact and the considerable destruction sustained by the vehicle, the motorist miraculously escaped without any reported injury with no casualty recorded at the scene,” the statement said.

Despite the clearance of the railway line, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis, disrupting vehicular movement along the affected corridor.

The wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their swift and coordinated response, noting that their intervention helped prevent the incident from resulting in more serious consequences.

Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration and prompt emergency response in managing transportation incidents, particularly those involving railway operations and adjoining road infrastructure.

He also urged motorists to observe railway safety regulations and exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.

The LASTMA chief warned motorists against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion, noting that disregard for safety regulations could result in devastating consequences.

The authority called on motorists and other road users to remain vigilant and comply with traffic and railway safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
