Consultant’s only child develops sickle cell disease after genotype tests reportedly showed parents were AA and AS

An X user, @Jah11james, has shared the story of a consultant in internal medicine whose only child has sickle cell disease, explaining that the couple had undergone genotype testing multiple times before their marriage.
The user shared the account in response to a post questioning why a doctor would have children with sickle cell disease despite supposedly knowing better.
According to @Jah11james, the consultant told him that he and his wife had tested several times before their wedding, with the results initially showing that he was genotype AA while his wife was AS.
He said the couple conducted another test shortly before their wedding, but the result showed that both of them were AS.
“I met a consultant in internal medicine, 2 years ago, his only child is a sickle celled, so there was a time she was in crisis and as we were trying to stabilise her I saw the man crying,” the user wrote.
He said he later asked the consultant why he was crying after the child had been stabilised.
“Before he got married, they’d run the test multiple times with his wife, which showed he was AA and she was AS, until a day to their wedding the last test showed they were both AS,” the user quoted the doctor as saying.
According to the account, the consultant decided to proceed with the marriage, hoping that the final result was inaccurate and that the earlier results were correct.
“He took the risk hoping the last result was wrong and initial ones were correct, unfortunately…,” the post continued.
