The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court over their alleged involvement in the assault of police officers and obstruction of lawful duty in the Iyana-Iyesi area of Ota, Ogun State.
The suspects, identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32, were arrested following an incident involving a police patrol team around The Bells area on October 2, 2026.
The command, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said trouble started after the patrol team intercepted and arrested a man allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to the police, the officers had handcuffed the suspect and were taking him to the station when they were allegedly ambushed by a group of persons.
The attackers were said to have descended on the policemen with cutlasses, stones and bottles, leaving some of the officers injured.
The police also alleged that the attackers damaged the operational vehicle used by the patrol team and facilitated the escape of the handcuffed suspect during the confrontation.
Following the incident, the command said it immediately launched intelligence-led operations which resulted in the arrest of the five suspects.
The suspects were subsequently charged with offences bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The command, however, said efforts were still ongoing to arrest other suspects allegedly involved in the attack.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, warned members of the public against physically confronting police officers or other law enforcement personnel performing their lawful duties.
Ojajuni said the safety of police officers carrying out legitimate assignments remained a priority of the command.
He urged members of the public who have grievances against law enforcement personnel to seek redress through established legal and administrative channels rather than resorting to violence.
The police stressed that further developments would follow as investigations and efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects continue.
