INEC Disowns Fake Governorship Candidates’ List Circulating Online

The Independent National Electoral Commission has disowned a fake online publication purporting to be a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states.

In a public notice issued on Monday and shared on its official social media platforms, the commission named the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.

INEC asked Nigerians to ignore the publication and not to share it. It also clarified that any claim that it had issued a special announcement on governorship candidates in the six states was false.

The commission urged the public to be vigilant and to confirm electoral information only through its verified channels, including official notices and press releases.

It listed its website as inecnigeria.org, its news portal as inecnews.com, its X and Instagram handles as @inecnigeria, and its Facebook page as INEC Nigeria.

For enquiries, INEC provided its call centre number, 0700-2255-4632, and short code, 4632. It also listed the telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, and the email address

The warning comes two days after the commission published the final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections, amid reports of omissions in some states.

Over the weekend, it was reported that the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, were missing from the published lists. No reason was given for their omission.
