Labour Strike, Referendum Against Tinubu’s Re-election — APM Campaign

The Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO) has described the three-day warning strike by Nigerian workers as a “direct referendum” on President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its bid for a second term.

The campaign organisation said the industrial action had exposed the “catastrophic consequences” of the economic policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, arguing that the growing hardship faced by Nigerians could influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communication, Richard Ihediwa, on Sunday, the Campaign Council said the strike, triggered by the demands of organised labour, reflected the “harsh realities” of Tinubu’s economic reforms.

“The warning strike is a direct referendum on a failed government; a stark measure of how ill-conceived and ill-implemented economic policies have triggered widespread poverty in Nigeria,” it said.

The organisation questioned the rationale for Tinubu seeking a second term when, according to it, Nigerians had been left to bear the consequences of his administration’s anti-people policies.

“We ask, how can a government that failed to shield its citizens from the consequences of its policies, credibly ask the same citizens to renew its mandate?” it asked.

The MDPCO also criticised the government over what it described as delayed capital-budget implementation, repeated budget rollovers, increased borrowing, declining transparency and accountability, and the failure of Nigerians to experience tangible benefits from the removal of fuel subsidy.

It accused the APC administration of becoming a “firefighter without a hose” after allegedly creating the economic conditions responsible for the current crisis.

“The APC government that lit the ‘fire’ now consuming the entire nation has become a firefighter without a hose as President Tinubu obviously has no answers to the problems brought to our nation by his administration,” the statement said.

The campaign organisation further dismissed the government’s claims of economic gains, arguing that such improvements remained largely invisible to ordinary Nigerians grappling with rising living costs and declining purchasing power.

“When wages lose value, the cost of living keeps rising and workers barely survive, government statistics and celebratory claims become meaningless,” it said.

It called instead for people-centred economic reforms backed by transparent social safety nets, increased national production, improved security and greater accountability.

The MDPCO declared that the proposed Makinde/Daura presidency offered Nigerians an alternative through the “Reset Nigeria Agenda,” which it described as a data-driven and people-friendly programme focused on inclusive growth, intensive national production, security, transparency and accountability.

It said Nigerians across political divides were increasingly rallying behind APM presidential candidate and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, ahead of the 2027 election.

“This is why Nigerians from all walks of life and even across party lines are queuing behind the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde in their collective quest to use the 2027 presidential election to reset Nigeria to a nation that truly works for all,” the organisation said.
